Breaking Barriers: A Story of Defying Cultural Norms and Empowering Women
Growing up in a small community based on cultural limitations, I faced the traditional gender roles imposed on women. Education for girls was considered unnecessary and I was raised to just want to be married. Yet, I loved to learn and knew I could have so much more. At 19, I was fortunate to have my brother who recognized my potential. He knew I could've done well in college and with his teaching and encouragement, he ignited my determination to pursue my education despite my family's opinions.
When my parents arranged a marriage for me, I bravely refused, insisting that I needed to go to college. This decision was initially hard for them, but I knew I had to stand my ground and they soon saw that there was more to a girl's dreams than marriage. College opened many doors, but it was also new. I formed a support group with other women who faced similar cultural experiences so together we could empower one another to challenge these societal expectations and aim higher.
After graduating with a business degree, I now have two small businesses and I help my dad with his! I am a local advocate for women's rights, and I continue to strive to change the mindset that initially hindered me in my old community and others like it. Reflecting on my journey, I am thankful for the resilience and support that helped me move forward. Hoping that other women will find the same. We women can overcome adversity and achieve our dreams!!
